The 771 Backpack

This page contains information on what to take for backpacking trips. There will eventually be a couple lists on here. For now we have the packing list that our Scoutmaster, Mr. Garman, used for his Philmont trips. You can download it as an excel spreadsheet below. Here is a message from Mr. Garman pertaining to his list:

Attached is my suggested Philmont Equipment List. I come out with a base weight under 14.5 lbs. With 8 lbs (4 qts) water, I am at 22.5. With 10 lbs of crew gear, I am at 32.5 lbs.

This is what I took last year and it worked out very well for me. The long john's were a luxury (safety) item. Glad I took them.

Items such as knives, sun tan lotion, first aid kits, spices, hand sanitizer, matches or lighter, camp stoves and fuel, pots and pans, tents, sewing kit, toilet paper, toilet shovel, bear bags, rope, food, etc are considered troop gear. We may want to even double up on the tooth paste to cut down on weight.

Remember, every ounce counts in backpacking.

I would expect every Scout to have a base weight below 17.5 lbs. With full water and 15 lbs of crew gear (should be with max food), the pack weight should be no heavier than 40 lbs.

Dick.
